AI Optimization Score

How IndexMind calculates your overall AI optimization score.

Your AI Optimization Score is a single number between 0 and 100 that represents how well your website is optimized for discovery and citation by AI systems. It is the primary metric on your IndexMind dashboard and the quickest way to gauge your AI readiness at a glance.

How the Score Is Calculated

The AI Optimization Score is a composite metric. It aggregates signals from multiple dimensions of your site, each weighted to reflect its impact on how AI models discover, interpret, and reference your content.

Score Components

The following five components feed into your overall score:

Schema Health

Measures the quality and completeness of your structured data markup. AI systems rely heavily on schema.org annotations, JSON-LD blocks, and other structured data formats to understand what your pages are about. Sites with rich, accurate schema markup score higher because they give AI models clearer signals about their content.

Freshness

Evaluates how recently your content has been updated. AI training data and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems favor content that is current. Pages with stale publish dates, outdated statistics, or unchanged content over long periods receive lower freshness scores.

Accessibility

Checks whether AI crawlers can actually reach and read your content. This includes your robots.txt configuration, sitemap availability and accuracy, page load behavior, and whether content is hidden behind JavaScript rendering that crawlers cannot execute. If an AI system cannot access your content, it cannot cite you.

Trust Signals

Assesses markers of expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (EEAT). These include author attribution, editorial standards, citation of sources, about pages, credentials, and other indicators that help AI systems evaluate the reliability of your content.

Answer Quality

Evaluates how well your content answers the kinds of questions users ask AI systems. This looks at clarity of writing, completeness of information, logical structure, use of headings and lists, and whether your content directly addresses common queries in your domain.

Score Ranges

RangeRatingWhat It Means
0 – 40Needs WorkYour site has significant gaps in AI optimization. AI systems are unlikely to cite or recommend your content consistently. Focus on the lowest-scoring components first.
40 – 70ProgressingYou have a solid foundation but there is room for improvement. Some AI systems may cite you, but you are likely losing visibility to better-optimized competitors.
70 – 100StrongYour site is well-optimized for AI discovery. AI systems can find, understand, and cite your content effectively. Continue monitoring to maintain your position.

When the Score Updates

Your AI Optimization Score recalculates after each crawl. When IndexMind completes a crawl of your site, it re-evaluates every component and produces an updated score. You can trigger a manual crawl at any time from your dashboard, or rely on scheduled crawls based on your plan tier.

Score history is preserved so you can track progress over time. Each crawl generates a snapshot, allowing you to see how changes to your site affect your score and identify which improvements had the most impact.

Improving Your Score

The most effective way to improve your score is to address the lowest-scoring component first. Each component page in your dashboard provides specific, actionable recommendations. Common high-impact actions include:

  • Adding or fixing structured data markup (Schema Health)
  • Updating outdated content with current information (Freshness)
  • Ensuring your robots.txt and sitemap are correctly configured (Accessibility)
  • Adding author bios, credentials, and editorial policies (Trust Signals)
  • Restructuring content to directly answer common questions (Answer Quality)

Small improvements in a weak component often produce larger score gains than incremental improvements in an already-strong component.
