Autonomy Levels

Control how much independence Bob has when managing your site.

Bob's autonomy level determines how much independence he has when working with your site. You choose the level that matches your comfort with AI-driven changes, from purely observational to fully automated within guardrails.

The three levels

Advisory

Bob observes and recommends only. He analyzes your site data, answers your questions, and surfaces insights, but never proposes structured actions or triggers any automation. This is a read-only experience where Bob acts as a knowledgeable consultant you can ask questions to at any time.

Best for: Teams getting started with AI-driven SEO who want to understand Bob's capabilities before enabling automation.

Propose

Bob surfaces proposed actions for your manual approval. When Bob identifies an improvement such as a missing schema property, an underperforming page, or a competitive gap, he creates a structured action item in your Action Plan. You review each proposal and explicitly approve or dismiss it before anything happens.

The action status flow is: proposedapprovedexecuted → (or failed / dismissed).

Best for: Teams that want AI-powered recommendations with human oversight on every change.

Auto

Bob auto-executes approved action types within your configured guardrails. Actions that fall within your risk profile and allowed action types are executed automatically. Actions outside those boundaries still require manual approval, which ensures you always have a safety net.

Best for: Teams that trust Bob's recommendations and want to move fast on routine optimizations without manual bottlenecks.

Auto-execute respects your guardrails and risk profile. Actions outside configured boundaries always require manual approval. You can review all executed actions in the Action Plan at any time.

Only users with the OWNER or ADMIN role can manage action approvals on paid plans. Other team members can view proposed actions but cannot approve or dismiss them.

Changing your autonomy level

  1. Navigate to /app/agent and open the Guardrails page.
  2. Under Autonomy Level, select Advisory, Propose, or Auto.
  3. Click Save to apply the change.

The new level takes effect immediately. Any actions already in the proposed state remain in your Action Plan. They are not automatically executed when you switch to Auto, which gives you a chance to review them first.

Action status flow

When Bob operates in Propose or Auto mode, every action moves through a defined lifecycle:

  1. Proposed: Bob identifies an improvement and creates an action item.
  2. Approved: You (or Auto mode) approve the action for execution.
  3. Executed: The action is carried out via the configured integration (webhook or GitHub Actions).
  4. Failed: The action was attempted but did not complete successfully. Bob surfaces the error for your review.
  5. Dismissed: You decided not to take the action. Bob learns from dismissals to improve future proposals.
